Embracing shade in Sydney gardens

Embracing shade in Sydney gardens is my 'magnum opus' on understanding and successfully using shady areas in your garden.

My main objective in creating this book was to help gardeners cope with what is often seen as a liability in the garden - shade - with which I had struggled a fair bit in my own plot. Over the years, I have realised that shade in the garden is actually an asset - indeed, it is essential for the survival of many of our plants, as well as for creating a more comfortable environment for us to live and garden in during hotter summers.

My book has over 100 pages of detailed information that will help you to understand shade and explore plants for every level of the garden: from trees down to groundcovers, and even shade-loving edibles.

Topics covered in each chapter

1. The value of shade
2. Understanding shade
3. Manipulating shade
4. Solving problems in shade
5. Finding plants for shade
6. Small trees
7. Large shrubs
8. Small shrubs
9. Climbing plants and espaliers
10. Perennial flowering plants
11. Perennial foliage plants
12. Carpeting groundcover plants
13. Bulbs
14. Annuals
15. Edible plants

As well as helping you to understand the issues around gardening in shade, the book details hundreds of plants that suit each of the microclimates that are created. I discuss planting ideas for using foliage and flowers to create the effect you may want and show that it's possible to really take advantage of the shady environment. What's more there are links provided from the mentioned plants directly back to my website so you can access detailed cultivation notes.

I'm sure you'll find plenty to interest you and give you the practical information to garden successfully in shade.
