Plant Description

Salvia Ellie

Salvia Ellie

This is considered to be a cultivar of Salvia splendens. It appeared in a Queensland garden. It is similar in form to Salvia 'Van Houttei', which is also regarded as related to Salvia splendens. 'Ellie' grows to about 1.5 m and has spires of largish, peachy-pink flowers held in dusky calyces for a long period during the warmer months. The leaves are attractively veined. It does well in sun or partial shade. It is frost sensitive. It can be pruned back in May or in mid-August. Occasionally deadheading of spent blooms will prolong flowering.
