This Salvia caught my eye at the local nursery, as it looked like a bright red version of the 'Wish' series (such as 'Wendy's Wish') but was apparently not related to them, as according to the label it is a cross between Salvia splendens and Salvia darcyi. The large flowers make quite an impact. As they age, some of the blooms turn pink but I just flick these off! The shrub grows to about 70-85 cm and it is said to be heat- and drought-tolerant, and able to grow in sun or part-shade. I am enjoying growing my specimen in a sunny border with other hot-coloured flowers and foliage. I cut it back in autumn, when I prune some of my other low-growing Salvia. In colder areas, leave pruning until late winter.
