Plant Description

Blechnum neohollandicum

Blechnum neohollandicum

Previously called Doodia aspera and known colloquially as the prickly rasp fern this is a terrestrial fern often seen growing in rainforest margins or in eucalyptus forests in Eastern Australia. In Sydney it is often found as an understorey groundcover under gum trees such as the Sydney blue gum (Eucalyptus saligna). It grows about 20-45 cm tall with vertical fronds with toothed margins. The new growth in spring is pink-reddish and very attractive. The fronds are covered in small bumps, giving them a rough texture. It grows in sun or shade and likes some moisture in acidic soils with some organic content. It is easy to propagate by division.
