How should I care for a philanopsis orchid. It has 2 small white flowers which are whithered. Also what do I do with the roots which are outside the pot. It is only a fairly small plant that was given to me and is still in a clear plastic pot inside a ceramic pot.the leaves look fairly healthy. What should I be doing for it at this time of year. I have it inside in a southside room where it gets plenty of light but a short period of morning sun.

If your Phalaenopsis is still alive you must be doing something right. But if it is looking poorly re-pot it. Remove sphagnum moss or whatever it is potted in, cut off any dead roots and place it in an open mix such as small bark, charcoal and perlite. Phalaenopsis like damp roots but not wet - better to sit the pot in a very weak solution of fertilizer for a few minutes every few days or if you notice the roots going grey which is a sign of being dry. Hydrated roots are green. Good luck.
